Tour Plan

01

Morning: Learning about Heritage

  • This tour begins at the KwaMuhle Museum, once the headquarters of the city’s notorious Native Affairs Department. Now transformed into a center of reflection. This is where students confront the past to understand the roots of social justice, human rights, and transformation in South Africa.
  • Next, we travel to the Mahatma Gandhi Phoenix Settlement, founded in 1904. Here, learners will walk through Gandhi’s original home and printing press, where he developed the concept of Satyagraha (peaceful resistance). It’s a powerful lesson in leadership, ethics, and standing up for what’s right.
02

Midday: Inspiration by those who led the way

  • Our journey continues to the Ohlange Institute, a World Heritage Site founded by Dr. John Dube, South Africa’s first president of the ANC and a visionary leader. This is where Nelson Mandela cast his first democratic vote in 1994, making it important ground in our democracy.
  • After Ohlange we them move to the historic Inanda Seminary, established in 1869, one of the first institutions dedicated to the education of African girls. Students will learn about the role of women in the liberation and transformation of South Africa through the stories of alumnae who shaped the course of our history.
03

Afternoon: A Feast of Culture at eWushwini

  • Our final stop is the spectacular eWushwini Pan African Centre for Arts, Culture & Heritage, nestled in the scenic Inanda Valley, KwaNgcolosi. Here, students are treated to a rich fusion of traditional cuisine, culture, and creativity.
  • At eWushwini, students will enjoy a hearty traditional meal, with the option to choose modern dishes or the ever popular shisanyama. As they eat, they’ll be surrounded by the sounds, rhythms, and colors of African culture.
  • The experience continues with a tour of the Wushwini Arts Centre, time permitting. This offers students a deeper understanding of identity, unity, and creative freedom. The final part of the tour is designed to be a celebration of who we are, and it becomes a space where food, art, and heritage come alive in one unforgettable experience.
