Day 1: Departure from Durban to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

  • Morning: Begin your journey with a scenic 3-hour drive from Durban to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Africa's oldest proclaimed game reserve.
  • Afternoon: Check into Hilltop Camp, the park's main accommodation located in the northern section. Hilltop Camp offers a range of lodging options, from self-catering chalets to non-self-catering rondavels.
  • Evening: Relax with dinner at the camp's restaurant, savoring local cuisine while soaking in the serene surroundings.

Day 2: Exploration and Game Drives

  • Early Morning: Embark on a guided morning game drive in an open safari vehicle. This is the prime time to spot predators like lions and leopards as they are most active during these hours
  • Return to Hilltop Camp for a hearty breakfast. Spend the late morning at leisure, perhaps take a dip in the camp's pool or visit the on-site curio shop for souvenirs
  • After lunch, consider a self-guided walking trail around the camp to observe smaller wildlife and bird species. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting over 340 bird species
  • Evening: Join an evening game drive to experience the park's nocturnal life. The drive concludes with a traditional boma dinner under the stars, featuring local dishes and storytelling around an open fire.

Day 3: Cultural Excursion and Boat Safari

  • Morning: Visit a nearby Zulu village for an authentic cultural experience. Engage with the local community, learn about Zulu traditions, and enjoy traditional music and dance performances.
  • Afternoon: Drive to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located approximately an hour from Hluhluwe. Here, embark on a boat safari on the St. Lucia Estuary to observe hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species in their natural habitat.

Day 4: Final Game Drive and Return to Durban

  • Early Morning: Opt for a final sunrise game drive to capture any wildlife sightings you may have missed. The early morning light offers excellent photography opportunities.
  • Mid-Morning: After breakfast, check out from Hilltop Camp. Begin your journey back to Durban, with optional stops at local craft markets along the way to purchase handmade souvenirs.
  • Afternoon: Arrive in Durban, marking the end of a memorable safari experience.
